Automating The Espresso Machine
Technology

Yesterday I hooked up an external X10 universal module (managed by Homeseer) to control our La Spaziale Mini Vivaldi II espresso machine. Now we don't have to go downstairs every morning to turn the machine on. On weekdays the unit now comes on at 5am and off at 7am, and on weekends its on at 5am and off at 3pm for our morning and afternoon shots. Great little mod!

I had issues getting solder to stick to the pins on the control board so I just used some old scope probes I had laying around. To turn the unit on, the relay activates for 3 seconds and to turn it off, it activates for one second. The relay simply connects pins 1 and 6 on the front control board and emulates pressing the power button. Credit to JonW on s1cafe.com for posting about the shorting pins 1 and 6 trick.
